The only thing ‘new’ about this stomach bug is what Big Pharma has up its sleeve
The stories have been all over the media. The CDC released a terrifying report about a “new” superbug racing across the country.
They say it can trigger intense stomach pain, fever, and days of diarrhea. They’ll tell you some strains can’t even be treated by powerful antibiotics.
It sounds terrifying. And that’s exactly what our government and the drug companies want.
Because we’re not witnessing the rise of some new bacterial plague — just a sad public relations campaign meant to sell you a vaccine.
The superbug in the CDC report is called Shigella sonnei – and it’s not exactly some new health threat. It’s one of the most common types of bacteria in the United States, and we first noticed it was becoming resistant to antibiotics more than half a century ago.
So why all the hysteria now – even though there have been only 243 cases of antibiotic resistant Shigella infections over the past several months?
Turns out there are two different Shigella vaccines in late-stage testing and our National Institutes of Health helped fund one of them. As soon as the CDC report was released, researchers were all over the airwaves explaining how the Shigella vaccine was going to save us all.
That’s not science. It’s marketing.
Our government and the drug companies are both working toward the same goal – to get the Shigella vaccine added to the CDC’s childhood vaccination schedule.
Particularly for Big Pharma, it’s like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. But nobody is going to get the shot unless they believe the threat of a Shigella superbug infection is real.
You can avoid Shigella just like you’d avoid any other superbug. Wash your hands regularly and avoid unnecessary antibiotics in your medicine cabinet and in the meat you buy.
In the meantime, we’ll be keeping a close eye on Shigella – both the facts and its PR campaign.
