What’s a McDonald’s doing on the grounds of this heart hospital?
Hamburgers, hot dogs, cheesecake and ice cream sound more like food choices you’d find at a county fair than a hospital.
But those are actually on the menu at South Carolina’s Greenville Memorial Hospital, where the prestigious Heart and Vascular Institute resides
The food options at Greenville Memorial also include a Chick-fil-A and Au Bon Pain (home to the 560-calorie, trans fat- containing Chocolate & Strawberry Cream CroisBun).
But that’s not the only hospital offering a variety of junk food selections.
Should anyone at the Broward General Medical Center in Ft. Lauderdale, perhaps while visiting its “Heart Center of Excellence,” crave a Big Mac, they need look no further than the lobby for a McDonald’s.
If that sounds strange to you, you’re not alone.
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine just issued its fourth report on the “worst” heart hospital food. And as you may have guessed, they weren’t talking about the taste…
The group has been tracking unhealthy foods served in hospitals, and this year named its worst of the worst – five top heart centers offering the kind of cuisine you’d expect from airport concessions.
Also included in its report is the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where the choices for dining include a Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A and Au Bon Pain. Tampa General has its very own McDonald’s, and another hospital McDonald’s was found at Jackson-Madison County Hospital in Jackson, Tenn.
Of course, you won’t only find patients and visitors eating at the hospital McDonald’s or Wendy’s. Plenty of doctors and nurses are seen in line, too.
Ahhh… “Do as I say, not as I do” medicine…
