When shopping for sunglasses, there are three features to look for
If you’re outside in full sunlight, you better protect your eyes.
As I mentioned last week, excessive exposure to sunlight can actually burn your corneas. And that’s just for starters. Frequent sunlight exposure also increases risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
Obviously, a small investment in a good pair of sunglasses pays a huge dividend in keeping your vision healthy.
So…first, you want to make sure the glasses block UV rays.
Second, wraparound sunglasses do the best job of reducing glare.
And finally, I overlooked one item: polarization.
An HSI member named Bill from Ohio writes…
“Your new article on sunglasses is fine, as far as it goes. But in mentioning the problem of glare ‘from below,’ you should have added that those sunglasses be of the polarized type.
“I do a lot of paddling (and motorcycling), and would never be without my polarized sunglasses to beat glare. And they need not be at all expensive. I found my most recent pair for $20.”
Thanks, Bill. Our eyes needed that.
