For complete vision protection, add this essential super-antioxidant
You’ve got antioxidants, and then you’ve got super-antioxidants. And when it comes to protecting your vision, there’s a super-antioxidant you can’t do without.
Yesterday I told you about the AREDS formula for preventing age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
That’s an excellent formula, but as I pointed out, it really should include lutein and zeaxanthin, two antioxidant-rich carotenoids that also help reduce AMD risk.
Now, to turn that into a true super formula, we need to add just one more carotenoid: astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin’s antioxidant activity is up to 500 times greater than vitamin E. In addition, this powerhouse anti-inflammatory has been shown to easily cross into eye tissue where it genuinely works wonders.
In wet AMD (the most damaging form of the disease), the retina is damaged by tiny blood vessels that develop behind it. Oxidative damage and inflammation prompt the formation of these micro-capillaries.
Research has shown astaxanthin to be highly effective in suppressing micro-capillary formation and inhibiting the dangerous advanced stage of AMD.
The best dietary sources of astaxanthin are all the same color: red. Salmon, salmon roe, rainbow trout, shellfish, and red-pigmented fruits and vegetables such as carrots and red peppers are all good sources of this indispensible super-antioxidant.
