Help control diabetic neuropathy with a natural supplement
Is there a cure for neuropathy?”
That question comes from an HSI member named Marion. And the simple answer is: maybe.
Neuropathy is nerve damage, characterized by a numbness or painful tingling in the feet, legs, hands and arms. It can also contribute to dementia. And while neuropathy is a common side effect of diabetes, it’s sometimes caused by other factors, such as thyroid problems and chemotherapy.
Marion should be aware that some doctors treat the symptoms of neuropathy with drugs such as oxycodone (an opioid pain reliever), anticonvulsants, and even antidepressants.
None of these drugs do anything to address the root cause of nerve damage.
So the first important step (other than avoiding the drugs mentioned above) is to strictly manage blood sugar levels.
Then, with blood sugar under control, supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid may offer considerable support.
A few years ago I told you about four trials that tested a very high dose of ALA (600 mg per day) given intravenously. After three weeks, diabetic neuropathy symptoms were significantly reduced.
Other trials have shown that some diabetics may also respond to oral supplements of 600 mg per day.
Neuropathy is a serious condition that can lead to grave health problems and even death, so don’t try to go it alone. Find a doctor who can help monitor your progress without resorting to drugs that will only mask the symptoms.
