A few days ago I told you about treating anxiety with kava. A review of 24 studies showed that kava is an excellent anxiety-tamer, especially when combined with amino acids such as L-lysine or L-arginine.

But kava comes with a caveat: Handle with care.

In a new article about kava, pharmacist Suzy Cohen offers some specific warnings:

  • Kavalactones–the active components of kava–have a profound effect on the entire body, not just the brain
  • Some people who are sensitive to kavalactones may actually feel intoxicated when using kava
  • To avoid over-sedation, never combine kava with anti- anxiety meds or antidepressants
  • Always avoid alcohol use with kava, anti-anxiety meds, and antidepressants

To Your Good Health,

Jenny Thompson
