Call it “healthy” or call it “naked”–either way it’ll be delicious
More than 12 years ago, HSI members first read about probiotics–the good bacteria in your digestive tract that neutralize harmful bacteria, aid digestion, and enhance your immune system.
We’ve come a long way from discussing supplemental probiotics (in the April 1998 Members Alert) to 2010 where we find probiotic pizza about to hit the market.
I don’t think anyone in 1998 saw this one coming!
It’s called Naked Pizza, and the entrepreneurs behind it already have one restaurant in New Orleans, with plans to open several more U.S. franchises before the end of the year.
Why is this pizza “Naked”? The owners are purposely avoiding “healthy”–they say the word actually scares people, whereas “Naked” is supposed to suggest natural and unadorned (and maybe just a little naughty?).
Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that probiotics will survive the pizza baking process and the stomach’s powerful digestive enzymes.
But even if a slice of Naked doesn’t turn out to be a reliably rich source of probiotics, the pizza dough sounds like a winner: 12 whole grains, including buckwheat and amaranth. It’s also fortified with prebiotics– carbohydrates that prompt the growth of probiotics.
Fortification with pepperoni and mushrooms will cost a little extra.
