KFC says they’re extending their “limited time” offer of their Double Down sandwich because it’s been such a big hit.

But I’m suspicious.

The Double Down, of course, is the bunless KFC sandwich that puts cheese and bacon between two chicken filets. If you order the fried version, you’ll be getting 540 calories, more than 30 grams of fat, and a whopping 1,380 mg of sodium.

But a friend of mine came up with a system that significantly lowers all those totals.

He ordered a fried Double Down, took two bites, and threw the rest away.

His one-word review: “Inedible.”

Now this is a guy in his 50s, so it’s not a surprise that he would refuse to eat something he described as a “big greasy mess with some kind of foul sauce on it.” But he wasn’t the only one who rejected the notorious DD.

His teenage son also took two bites and threw in the towel.

And that’s why I’m suspicious about KFC’s extension of the DD promotion.

Here’s my theory: They’re not extending it because it’s so successful. They’re extending it because they have warehouses full of the already-assembled ingredients and they’re going to keep extending the “limited” offer until the ingredients are gone.

I don’t know if that’s true–it’s just my guess. But when a fried food can’t win over a hungry 15-year-old boy…that’s got to be one lousy sandwich.

Jenny Thompson
