Gum disease prevention with a water jet
Gum disease? Try the wild water jet ride.
As I’ve mentioned many times, periodontal disease affects more than your gums. Researchers believe that inflammation related to the disease plays a role in promoting heart disease and metabolic syndrome (a precursor of type 2 diabetes).
This past October, after I sent you an e-mail about using vitamin D and antioxidants to prevent gum disease, I received this note from an HSI member named Elly.
“Years ago I suffered from bleeding gums – big trouble. Finally a specialist booked an appointment for surgery several months ahead.
“Then I read that a strong massage of the gums with a water jet daily can cure periodontitis. So I tried it – twice a day I ‘brushed’ with the water jet. My gums were getting better fast – bleeding stopped.
“By the time my surgery was due I insisted on another examination by the periodontist. He was really surprised! No surgery required. I have now been using a water jet once a day for years and never had a recurrence. Avoiding painful surgery was just a bonus.
“I cannot understand why dentists don’t encourage this method – it really works wonders.
I am now 81 and my gums are tough and pink.”
There are several types of oral water jet products on the market. Some work better than others, so do a little research before you buy. You can check customer reviews on Amazon.com and other websites.
