Get heartburn relief with a common food
“There is a tried and true remedy from one’s cupboard that relieves heartburn by the time you have it all swallowed.”
That sounds promising!
After sending you the e-Alert “Step It Up” (2/5/09), with suggestions for relieving heartburn and general dyspepsia without resorting to expensive drugs, I received an e- mail from an HSI member named Margaret who relies on sauerkraut to treat heartburn.
Margaret: “It must be the type that is not done in wine or it will not work as good. Sauerkraut can also rid ones body of an ulcer. If a tablespoon is taken with everything one eats for three weeks diligently the ulcer will be gotten rid of. Must be the plain sauerkraut as well.”
Naturally, I checked in with HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., to see if he was familiar with the sauerkraut heartburn cure.
Dr. Spreen: “I’ve heard of it for ulcers and other digestive difficulties, but I haven’t tried it clinically. It has a long history of use in digestive disorders, but I’m afraid that, since I don’t care for it too much, I’m not experienced with it. In Germany last year, however, I ate more than ever before and it isn’t as bad as I remembered!”
When I Googled “heartburn” and “sauerkraut” I was astonished to find well over 13,000 hits – article after article singing the praises of easing stomach distress using shredded cabbage fermented with salt. And a quick read of several articles confirms Margaret’s important tip: sauerkraut made with wine or vinegar should be avoided.
