Want to promote general antibiotic resistance? Easy – give antibiotics away for free!

“Free Antibiotics”

I spotted that surprising sign posted at the entrance of my local grocery store this week, along with this catchphrase: “You didn’t pay for the germs. Why pay for the antibiotics?” That’s cute. It makes no sense at all, but it’s cute.

Turns out, however, you DO need a doctor’s prescription to receive one of the 18 common varieties of generic antibiotics they’re giving away free. And the program ends in March, so to ensure general antibiotic resistance, stock up now!

The grocery store’s website explains the reasoning behind the program: “Your good health is important to us. We want to do what we can to help keep you and your family feeling your best during the winter months.”

Winter months. In other words “cold and flu season.” Even though antibiotics are completely useless in treating a cold or flu.

My favorite part of this program is the website’s Frequently Asked Questions section, which provides some help for customers who may not grasp the concept of “free.”

“Will you bill my insurance company for me? No. For this service we will not bill any insurance plan.”

You’ve got to wonder – is that REALLY a frequently asked question?
