Amazing but true – Pentagon researchers are examining alternative medicine

This one is not an outrage, really…but it IS outrageously surprising.

In the e-Alert “Shape of Things to Come” (10/28/08), I posed this question: What has five sides and has taken a sudden interest in acupuncture?

I did NOT see this one coming.

One of the drug industry’s biggest customers is the U.S. Department of Defense. So it was downright staggering to come across this headline in USA Today: “Pentagon Researches Alternative Treatments.”

According to the article, Pentagon officials have started examining acupuncture, yoga, meditation, and other alternative therapies to help deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression among troops called on to serve multiple tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

“Pentagon” and “meditation” in the same sentence? I’m afraid to ask how much the military is spending on incense.
