Something sweet might tame the Super Bug
Something sweet might tame the Super Bug
A few days ago, when I sent you the e-Alert “Super Bug” (10/31/07), I heard from Alicia Potee, Managing Editor of the HSI Members Alert. Alicia reminded me that HSI was way ahead of the curve in dealing with MRSA – that virulent bacterium we’ve been hearing so much about lately.
To quickly recap
- Health officials say MRSA is responsible for as much as 20 percent of all infections picked up in hospitals and other health care facilities
- MRSA was recently found to be twice as deadly as previously thought
- MRSA is resistant to most antibiotics
- MRSA is easily transmitted by casual contact
Alicia reminded me that a recent HSI Members Alert featured active manuka honey – a rare New Zealand honey with remarkable healing powers.
In the January 2007 article, Alicia wrote, “Helicobacter pylori infections, diabetic foot ulcers, post-surgical wounds – you name it, this honey can probably heal it. It can even take on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (better known as MRSA, or golden staph) – the new hospital superbug that’s grown increasingly deadly in recent years. While more and more patients are developing this infection (which is unresponsive to antibiotics and other forms of topical treatment), the honey I’m talking about can actually wipe it out.”
In her article, Alicia explains the unique mechanism that makes manuka so powerful, reviews manuka research, and adds invaluable tips you’ll need to know when you go shopping for manuka honey. HSI members can use their password to access the article from the Members Alert archives on our web site at hsionline.com.
