Would you like a little rocket fuel in your salad?
Would you like a little rocket fuel in your salad?
According to an analysis conduced by the Environmental Working Group, more than 40 million women in the U.S. may have greater health risks due to exposure to perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel that’s been identified in trace amounts in fruits and vegetables, drinking water, and milk. Perchlorate may lower thyroid hormone levels in women.
An HSI member named Ralph has posted an article on this topic in a Healthier Talk community forum thread titled “Chemicals in food produce thyroid problems.” The article also notes that hundreds of tests conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other independent researchers confirm that typical perchlorate exposure in the U.S. is high enough to affect thyroid levels.
Here’s how HSI members responded to this article.
JonB: “MY theory is chemicals produce hormone problems, not only in food, but the air we breathe, the medicines we take, and on and on.”
Dr. H.F. Wombat: “Chemicals interfere with micronutrient availability, triggering desperate responses through the hormone systems. We do cause almost all of our diseases. Treating them with agents designed to alter symptomatology is futile and often harmful.”
Donna: “The cerebral cortex runs the limbic system, which feeds the hypothalamus, which feeds the pituitary, which feeds the thyroidand there are off shoots from all of them, except the cerebral cortex. But the thyroid is most easily disturbed by our habits. And the thyroid is in charge of cleaning our blood, regulating our blood oxygen levels, programming our cells, and taking care of our organs. The bottom line to this thread is: get your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) tested.”
Naturalway: “My problem showed up in my adrenals. Everyone’s different. For some it shows up in their reproductive system and many wouldn’t associate that type of problem with the endocrine system. An endocrinologist only knows how to give drugs, not how to correct the system. Once you’re on the drugs the gland stops working and you can’t ever go off the drugs. That is the last thing I want to happen to me.”
