An Organic Hotdog?

The words “organic” and “hot dog” almost seem comically out of place when they appear in the same sentence. But there really is an organic hot dog out there. And “organic” just begins to reveal how truly good this hot dog may be.

But is it too good to be true? To be honest, I don’t really know. I haven’t tried this hot dog myself. I found out about it from a colleague named Barb who sent me an e-mail with some information about The Great Organic Hot Dog, made by Applegate Farms.

Here are some of the ways Applegate’s organic dog differs from your average tube steak:

  • The only meat used is whole muscle meat (In other words: no “mystery” meat)
  • The beef comes from animals that are never given antibiotics or growth hormones
  • MSG, fillers, colorings, sugars and sweeteners are not used in processing
  • The hot dogs are gluten and casein free – a bonus for those who are allergic to wheat or dairy products
  • No soy protein
  • No nitrates!

And most amazing, The Great Organic Hot Dog is made only from organic grass-fed and grass-finished beef. Some beef producers feed their stock grass, but then “finish” by fattening the animals with corn feed just before going to market. But when the animals are fed grass and finished with only grass, the omega-3 fatty acid content is about twice that of meat from corn-finished beef.

That’s one healthy hot dog!
