“Some supplements I’ve found to be helpful for depression.”

That’s the straightforward title of an HSI Healthier Talk community forum thread started by a member named Karl.

“Over the past couple of years, I’ve found a couple of supplements that have significantly improved my emotional state. One is chlorophyll (I take 60 mg derived from alfalfa leaves, taken in the morning) and the other is vitamin E (high gamma, 200 IU) taken along with selenium (200 mcg, derived from selenium yeast), after a meal before bedtime.

“From what I’ve read, the claim for chlorophyll is that it assists the body in the removal of toxins, and that it helps to increase the level of oxygen in the blood. If this is true, it would certainly make sense that these actions would help to alleviate depression.

“I also read recently in an HSI email that vitamin E works in concert with selenium, so they should always be taken together. For years, I have been taking vitamin E alone, so when I read this, I decided to try adding selenium. I took these supplements after eating one night, and found that I slept soundly and woke up the next morning feeling especially refreshed. This effect lasted for a couple of weeks or so, and although the intensity of the effect has waned a bit, I find that it continues to be helpful.

“The causes for depression differ from person to person, and therefore so does the remedy. No single therapy helps everyone. It may interest you to know that studies have found mantra meditation to be helpful in improving emotional states.”

In one of many responses to Karl’s opening comments, a member named Klutzo notes that he’s been struggling with depression associated with chronic Lyme disease. He writes: “The only thing that helps at all is L-tryptophan for the insomnia.” From that point on, much of the rest of the thread is devoted to Lyme disease and depression.
