And another thing

The antioxidant-rich pomegranate received high marks as a potential chemopreventive cancer-fighting agent in the results of two recent lab studies. In the first study, pomegranate extract inhibited the production of carcinoma cells in the human lung. And in the second study, pomegranate extract was found to promote the death of human prostate cancer cells.

Breast cancer risk is higher among overweight women, according to an American Cancer Society study. When breast cancer rates were compared to weight gain in more than 44,000 subjects, researchers found that women who gained more than 60 pounds through their adult years were one-and-a-half to two times more likely to develop various types of breast cancer compared to women who gained only 20 pounds as adults. Fat tissue produces estrogen, and increased estrogen has been linked to higher breast cancer risk.

Does skin cancer risk rise with increased dietary fat intake? Not according to a study that examined the diets of more than 650 skin cancer patients and 471 subjects who were cancer free. In fact, the analysis even suggested that fat intake might produce a slight protective effect against skin cancer, although researchers stopped short of recommending increased fat consumption to lower risk.

Dietary fiber intake may significantly cut the risk of disease-causing inflammation. In a study that followed more than 500 subjects for nearly a year and a half, researchers found that concentrations of C-reactive protein (a key inflammation marker for heart disease) were more than 60 percent lower among subjects who had the highest intakes of soluble and insoluble fiber.

And, in case you didn’t see it in the e-Alert

The Mediterranean diet –long known as a heart healthy one–may also help protect cognitive function. When researchers studied the dietary habits of more than 2,250 elderly New Yorkers, those who ate plenty of foods included in the Mediterranean diet were far less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. The primary components of the Mediterranean diet include fresh whole foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, nuts, and olive oil.

To reduce your risk of colon cancer, just eat ample amounts of these foods, which contain the highest concentrations of magnesium: green leafy vegetables, avocados, nuts and seeds, and whole grains. That’s the conclusion of a study that examined 17 years of medical records and food frequency questionnaires for more than 35,000 women over the age of 61. HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., recommends supplementation of 500 mg of magnesium per day.

Lemonade therapy? Sounds pretty inviting, doesn’t it? What’s not so inviting is the uncomfortable, sometimes excruciating health problem that lemonade therapy is used to address: kidney stones. The natural citrate in lemon juice helps prevent certain salts from forming kidney stones. Potassium citrate does the same thing, but some patients can avoid using this drug by upping their lemonade intake, according to a Duke University study.

For some women, happy hour might extend well beyond an hour. According to a brewing research institute in the Czech Republic, the phytoestrogens in hops and barley malt can be boosted to create a unique hormone replacement therapy. In an informal trial, 20 women reported fewer menopausal symptoms after drinking about 10 ounces of a low-calorie, low-alcohol beer every night for two months.
