Visit the HSI forum to discuss HRT
Last week I told you about a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) study from Britain that adds the risk of gallstones to the growing list of HRT’s adverse side effects. But while I addressed HRT within the narrow definition of the new study, I neglected to then put the subject in a wider context and many of you wrote in to call me on it. As so many of you pointed out, there are natural alternatives to synthetic HRT that do not come with a troubling list of side effects.
A number of you made a beeline for the HSI Forum (hsibaltomore.com) and under the “HRT Therapy” entry opened up a lively discussion about the wide range of treatments for this complex health issue. So if you or someone you care about is coping with the symptoms of menopause, take a look at the recent Forum entries from Nico, Bbunnee and others. In particular, PJT and Tom B. took me to task for being too simplistic, and I don’t mind at all. On the contrary – I think of these e-Alerts as one side of a conversation that I hope you’ll join by going to the HSI Forum and adding your voice to the mix.
For a more detailed look at the subject of HRT from an expert in the field, the May issue of Dr. Jonathan V. Wright’s newsletter Nutrition & Healing features this article: “Q&A News flash on hot flashes: Think twice before undergoing synthetic hormone replacement therapy.” Dr. Wright offers a balanced perspective on conventional HRT versus bio-identical hormone replacement HRT, and also looks at how testosterone can be an important part of the HRT picture.
