Kanye helps Novartis move some product

Hip-hop artist Kanye West might have a future as a jingle writer – or a doctor.

But first he has to figure out how to go through the proper channels.

Recently, Kanye posted a new song on his website. He titled his song “Theraflu.” Here’s a sample of the lyrics…

Way too cold, I promise you’ll need some Theraflu

Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, get the Theraflu

Okay…maybe it wouldn’t make the catchiest jingle ever. But it was enough to catch the eye of executives at Norvatis, the maker of Theraflu.

Norvatis quickly issued a statement that distanced the company, and Theraflu, from Kanye’s song. They also took exception to an illustration on Kanye’s website that featured nudity alongside a box of Theraflu.

I think there was also a bit of legal pressure behind the scenes. Soon after the Norvatis statement, Kanye changed the song title to “Way too Cold.” He also removed the Theraflu logo from the illustration.

Apparently the song will stand, as is, with the recorded lyrics still in place.

I’ve got a hunch that Norvatis execs are secretly very pleased. Just imagine the millions of Kanye fans who will come down with a sniffle and think, “Uh! Get the Theraflu.”

As free advertising goes, that’s way too good.
