Again the FDA fails to stem unnecessary use of antibiotics in farm animals August 14, 2012
It appears the FDA is taking steps to limit use of antibiotics in farm animals. But in spite of the dangers of antibiotic resistance, this is one of the most inconsequential regulatory actions ever.
TV and radio host Dr. Drew gets caught schilling for Big Pharma July 23, 2012
Dr. Drew gets caught schilling for Big Pharma when GlaxoSmithKline court documents reveal a huge payday for the TV and radio host who apparently touted questionable sexual enhancement benefits of the Wellbutrin antidepressant.
A dangerous drug dependency might start in your doctor's office when he prescribes a common heartburn drug May 30, 2012
If you had a friend who developed a dependency on prescription painkillers or amphetamines, you might not even know it. Chances are, they’d be inclined to keep it a secret. But if the drug were a heartburn medication, there would be no shame. In fact, just the opposite. Here’s how a 2002 Boston Globe article put it. “Prilosec is so good, and patients so attached to it, that doctors jokingly call it ‘purple crack.'”
The solution to the acetaminophen crisis is simple, but the FDA won't sound the urgent warning May 23, 2012
A recent article reminded me of this 2009 expert panel. That gang of 37 recommended a ban of the prescription painkillers Vicodin and Percocet because they contain acetaminophen. Oddly, the panel did not call for a ban of Theraflu or any other over-the-counter med with acetaminophen.
Amazing! The FDA actually recommends supplements to offset dangers of a drug May 10, 2012
It doesn’t happen often. But every now and then the FDA recommends supplement use. And it always gives me a smile.
It's embarrassing to see how timid the FDA can be when big business puts profits before human safety April 23, 2012
This is a new one for me. For the very first time, I feel embarrassed for the FDA. Once again, they’ve shown that human health doesn’t matter when it comes to protecting profits of giant corporations.
What your doctor doesn't know about your drug prescription CAN hurt you April 5, 2012
If your doctor wants you to try a newly approved drug, tell him you’ll consider it in five years. Better yet, make it 10.
This very common prescription and OTC drug may do harm in all sorts of ways February 22, 2012
I’m talking specifically about proton pump inhibitor drugs (such as Prevacid, Nexium, and Prilosec). And yes, we’ve seen warnings about these drugs before. But now, with evidence of a very troubling new way PPI drugs can harm you, we’ve gotten to the point where it has to be asked…When do you take PPIs off the market to keep consumers out of harm’s way?
The DEA helps drug companies gouge unsuspecting consumers for obscene profits January 18, 2012
Every day, millions of people use a type of prescription drug that also happens to be in high demand as a recreational drug — it produces a cocaine-like high when it’s crushed and snorted. Of course, I’m talking about ADHD drugs — widely used, but also widely abused.
How to protect yourself from a common (and grueling) bacterial infection December 26, 2011
If you should get sick, the last place you want to be is a hospital. Hospitals are teeming with the most vile bacteria on earth. All it takes is a couple of doctors or nurses in a hurry to skip washing their hands, and it’s curtains.
Only one way to describe the FDA black box warning system: a dangerous mess November 29, 2011
Here’s how FDA officials warn you that you might be risking a coma, or fatal kidney damage, or some other horrendous adverse event linked to the drug you’re about to take: They take a fine-line marker and draw a box around the warning… that’s what the FDA considers a “black box warning.” And whenever the agency requires a drug to include one of these warnings, media reports always inform us that it’s the most serious warning required by the FDA.
When two drugs are repackaged as a combo drug, side effect risks soar October 19, 2011
I thought of that hilarious parody while reading about the newest FDA drug approval, which is not hilarious at all. The drug has a catchy name: Juvisync. It combines the statin Zocor with Januvia, a type 2 diabetes drug. So is it a cholesterol drug that controls blood sugar, or a blood-sugar-lowering drug that helps cut LDL cholesterol?
