A box without hinges, key, or lid
Yet golden treasure inside is hid
Do you know what food is described by that old riddle? I’ll
give you a hint: For several years mainstream nutritionists
foolishly treated this food item like some kind of heart-
stopping poison. Fortunately people are coming to their
senses and realizing that eggs provide a golden treasure of
nutrition.
No surprise then that the topic of eggs keeps popping up on
the HSI Forum. The most recent egg thread is titled “How to
eat an egg?” and it starts off with this question from a
member named John:
“I went to a lecture last night where a iridologist spoke and
said that if you eat an egg, you should ONLY eat the yolk
because the white ‘is the feathers’ and acts like a ‘plastic’ on
the gut. Has anyone else heard this? I was taught to eat foods
in their WHOLE state, thus, the WHOLE egg. Any
thoughts?”
In response to John’s posting, several comments in this
thread also address the practice of iridology (in which a
practitioner studies the iris of the eye to make a medical
diagnosis). Some members explain how they’ve found
iridology to be useful, while others, such as Francisco, are
suspicious:
“Anyone who’d confuse the white of the egg where perfectly
good Protein resides with the chicken’s feathers should have
their head examined. Eating the whole egg is fine though I do
have a friend who eats only the egg white now as he’s trying
to bring down his cholesterol. But eating the whole egg has
the most nutritional value as well as the best taste.”
A member named Ernie believes he’s found a weight-loss
benefit from eating eggs, but cooked a different way: “I have
NO scientific data to substantiate my idea, but I have lost 34
pounds in eight weeks. I read that eggs are not good for you
and I wondered why. Well, upon some research, I found out
just the opposite. I have eaten four hard boiled eggs with a
green onion for lunch for about three months. I have noticed
better digestion, better elimination and an overall feeling of
‘newness’.”
Meanwhile, a member named Rick says he takes his eggs
“over easy” after reading that egg whites, when not
sufficiently cooked, may cause biotin deficiency. But a
member named Marianne has no fear of a raw eggs, pointing
out that egg yolk is very rich in biotin: “A great way to
consume whole raw eggs is in smoothies. We have them
every morning; kefir, frozen berries, raw eggs, and stevia.
Very good!”
And with the holidays upon us, a member named Roz knows
a festive way to get on the outside of an egg: “Don’t forget
eggnog, w/or without the nog – add Nutmeg.”

RAVEN MAD
It was crowded in Baltimore on Sunday. The offense showed
up, the defense showed up, special teams was there, too – and
they all stayed for the whole game.
Actually, to say they showed up is a severe under-aggeration.
The offense had one of the best days I can remember as a
Ravens fan. Boller threw for four TDs and no interceptions.
Heap stole two touchdowns, fighting for a catch and a few
extra yards. Chester Taylor ran like a pro-bowler. Kevin
Johnson made an amazing catch that saved an INT. And
Clarence Moore is setting himself up to be a key receiver as
Boller grows into a real pro.
And the defense went in knowing they would not be losing
this game. With the D dominating the field, Eli Manning
completed only 4 of 18 passes, had two interceptions and the
offensive didn’t score at all while he was on the field.
But Eli isn’t the only Manning that Kyle had a better day
than. Boller threw twice as many TDs on Sunday as Peyton
Manning, who is breaking records left and right. Okay, so it’s
an irrelevant comparison and Peyton could throw more TDs
in one game than Boller might throw all season, but it’s still
just kind of cool.
Until next week, that is. Sunday night, the world will be
watching as everyone believes Peyton Manning will break
Dan Marino’s record for most TDs in one season. And guess
who they think he’s set to break it againstthe Ravens.
That’s right, my beloved Ravens are traveling to Indy (home
of the Baltimore Colts) to try to keep themselves out of the
record book as the team that let Peyton break the record. But
if anyone can do it, they can. Until the game against
Cincinnati, the defense had allowed only 7 touchdown passes
all year. And that includes playing against Tom Brady and
Donovan McNabb. They may not be Peyton, but they’re not
too shabby.
Of course, the one great thing about playing a QB that loves
to passthere are a lot of opportunities for interceptions.
And the Ravens defense is built for that. I’m sure Deion and
Ed Reed are hungry for their chance to grab one.
If the Ravens can hold Peyton to one TD (or none), it will be
a victory in itself, regardless of the points on the board. But
even if he gets four or five, the Ravens need to ignore it and
just focus on winning. The playoff race in the AFC is tight
and every game is a must-win for my boys in purple if they
still want to playing past January 2nd.
