HSI e-Alert – Week in Review

****************************************************
HEART DISEASE CURED IN JUST 14 DAYS!

George Washington University School of Medicine’s clinical associate professor Michael Mogadam, MD, can’t get over how fast and cheap the long-sought solution turned out to be. As Dr. Mogadam explains More than half of all adults with “hardening of the arteries” are actually infected with a common germ called C. pneumoniae. You catch it just by breathing, but the bug quickly spreads to your arteries, eating away at their walls. Then your body tries to patch the damage — by slapping on cholesterol. Heart attacks actually happen when these cholesterol bandages (called “plaques”) break loose from your artery walls. And that’s increasingly likely if this germ keeps corroding your arteries, requiring more and more patching.

THIS WEEK IN THE HSI FORUM

Virtually every dietary supplement – whether a vitamin, mineral or herb – is available in different forms. And the form you choose can make a big difference in the effectiveness of the supplement.

An HSI Forum thread titled “Magnesium Oxide,” underlines this point about forms. A member named Dan begins the thread: “I just ordered magnesium pills as part of a regimen I’m going to start to deal with hair loss. The magnesium pills came in the form of ‘Magnesium Oxide.’ I’ve never heard of this kind of magnesium and am wondering if this is a healthy form of it.”

Unfortunately, it’s not the best form.

An HSI member named Eric puts it this way: “That’s the ONE wrong kind. Mag citrate is the best one.” A member named Harry agrees with Eric and posts the address of an Internet site that carries a study supporting their opinion. The study – titled “Mg Citrate Found More Bioavailable Than Other Mg Preparations in a Randomised, Double-Blind Study” – is published in the journal Magnesium Research. A UK team of nutritionists compared the absorption of three magnesium forms: amino-acid chelate, citrate and oxide. After measuring urinary excretion of magnesium in 46 subjects over 60 days, they found magnesium citrate to be the best absorbed.

Absorption is an important issue with magnesium because many factors contribute to magnesium depletion. High stress and menstruation can reduce magnesium levels, while a heavy intake of starches, alcohol, diuretics and some prescription drugs (such as antibiotics) will increase urinary excretion of magnesium.

In the e-Alert “Nutrient Dense” (12/16/04), I noted that the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of magnesium is 420 mg for men and 320 mg for women. But HSI Panelist Allan Spreen, M.D., suggests taking 500 mg of magnesium daily. And in that same e-Alert he confirmed that magnesium oxide is a “poor form” that doesn’t contain enough elemental magnesium. Magnesium gluconate is a more effective form, recommended by Dr. Spreen.

Now that Dan is on track with what form of magnesium to look for, he asks, “Is magnesium something I should be taking with meals, or is it fine on an empty stomach?” And Harry delivers again with this accurate response: “I’d take it with meals. It may slightly improve the absorption.” And absorption may be further enhanced by taking the supplement with magnesium-rich foods, such as leafy green vegetables, nuts, dried beans and whole grains.

In many e-Alerts I’ve addressed the importance of magnesium intake, which has been shown to promote bone flexibility while helping to prevent type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. But magnesium provides some simple benefits as well, as a member who goes by “biztekmom” has found out: “Magnesium is a wonderful muscle relaxer so I usually take mine late in the day or at bedtime. If I’m anxious or a bit nervous about something I will usually take two at bedtime and I usually sleep peacefully and wake up refreshed.”

Other topics on the HSI Forum this week include:

  • Artery calcium deposits
  • Goat’s milk
  • Anesthetics
  • Fermented foods
  • Dangers of soy
  • Essential oils

To join in with any of these discussions, just go to our web site at www.hsionline.com, find your way to the Forum, and add your own insights and comments about health, nutrition and natural treatments.

The Importance of Being Inert
When pharmaceutical company researchers test their products in clinical trials, where do you suppose they get placebo pills? The answer to that question reveals surprising details about what we’ve always thought of as an inert agent, or an innocent “sugar pill.” It turns out that a placebo is sometimes quite a bit more than just a dab of sugar.
