THIS WEEK IN THE HSI FORUM

Unwanted side effects from vitamin supplements are rare, but there is one obvious exception. Niacin – also known as vitamin B-3 – can cause an uncomfortable flushing effect, as described by a member named Jim in the HSI Forum thread titled “Niacin side effects.”

Jim writes: “To help increase my HDL-Cholesterol, I have started taking 100 mg niacin I.R. 5 times a day. One of the side effects is a flushing reaction. My head and neck turn red, and I have a burning sensation that starts about 40 minutes after taking the niacin and usually lasts about an hour. I find this reaction to be uncomfortable, and it is very distracting. In other words, it is hard for me to function during this time.”

Jim goes on to say that after switching to inositol hexanicotinate – the no-flush form of niacin – he no longer experiences the discomfort. But now his doctor wants him to try a regimen of nicotinic acid. In
anticipation of a return of the flushing problem, Jim asks: “I was wondering if anyone could suggest a way to stop or reduce it.”

Several HSI members rally ’round with suggestions for Jim, starting with Nardo, who says, “What had helped me lessen the flush effect was taking it with a full glass of milk, and an aspirin, (tylenol).”

Nardo is on the right track to suggest taking niacin along with something for the stomach to digest, but a steady daily intake of either aspirin or Tylenol wouldn’t be advisable. Meanwhile, a member named Lily has a suggestion that will deliver plenty of very beneficial side effects: “Eat before taking niacin, and take 500 mg. of vitamin C with it. This works for me.”

A member named Frank agrees with the plan to take niacin with food (which is a good idea for any vitamin supplement). Franks writes: “I started on Niacin in 1991 (at 1000 mg per day) and reduced my cholesterol from 282 to 150. I use the time released niacin. I take 750 mg per day right now (250 in morning and 500 at night.) I take it with a full meal to eliminate the flushing but the severity of the flushing will depend on how much you eat which seems to be more critical in themorning since breakfasts are not usually big meals.”

The importance of niacin is well known to HSI members. In previous e-Alerts and Members Alerts, we’ve told you how niacin may help lower triglycerides while raising HDL cholesterol. And niacin helps regulate a gene called Sir2 that forms a protective barrier around your cells, defending them from rogue DNA molecules that cause the genetic instability that promotes aging. Jonathan V. Wright, M.D., has also noted that niacin is effective in managing degenerative arthritis,
anxiety, and type 1 diabetes.

Those who don’t need therapeutic doses of niacin can increase their intake with niacin-rich foods such as beef liver (about 15 mg per 3.5 oz.), peanuts, chicken, tuna, salmon and ground beef.

Other topics on the HSI Forum this week include:

* Dry eyes
* Natural anti-inflammatory
* Hydrogen peroxide
* Digestive enzymes & stomach acidity
* Eye floaters * Flaxseed oil and hormones
