This Week In The Health Sciences Institute e-Alert
Let’s face it, some of the treats that tempt us at holiday
parties or family get-togethers are not always the best choices
for good health. But if your host offers a bowl of almonds
and other nuts, don’t deny yourself this good source of
vitamin E.
In an HSI Forum thread titled “Vitamin E in nuts,” a member
named Adria asks: “Does anyone know anything about the
Vitamin E content in nuts?”
A member named Carlos Y notes that walnuts are rich in
omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E and folic acid. Almonds and
sunflower seeds are also good sources of E.
But how much vitamin E can you actually get from a handful
of nuts? A member who goes by lae tackles that question:
“Nuts are considered a good to excellent source of vitamin E.
Howevernuts only contain around 7 mg per ounce (at best).
Which means if you are planning on consuming 400 iu E
(through nuts alone), you’d have to eat about (using a 1mg =
1 i.u. conversion factor) 57 ounces of nuts.”
Lae makes a good point. But if in addition to nuts you’re also
consuming spinach, peppers and olive oil, then your vitamin
E intake will steadily rise. And that just might result in a
reduction of bladder cancer risk. A study presented earlier
this year at a meeting of the American Association for
Cancer Research showed that vitamin E contained in a
daily serving of spinach or a handful of almonds may cut the
risk of bladder cancer by as much as half.
So don’t shy away from those almonds. Like other varieties
of nuts, they deliver plenty of nutrition in a tasty package.
In another HSI Forum thread, a member named Clara offers
this greeting: “A wonderful Christmas to all, and may each
and every one of you who searches for the best health
possible achieve it.”
Thanks, Clara. Those are my sentiments exactly.

RAVEN MAD
Ah, the wonderful sounds of the season. All over Baltimore,
you can hear people – old and young alike – extolling the
rationalizations of the season. On lighted up street corners,
you can hear people saying, “At least Peyton didn’t break the
record against us,” “We held them to fewer points and TDs
than anyone else all year,” “If Stover’s kick hadn’t bounced
off a lineman, it would have been a different game.”
It’s like a Christmas concert – Baltimore style.
Of course, it’s all true, but it doesn’t matter. Sunday’s loss
put us in a fight for our very lives against three other teams
with the same record, just as hungry for that last wild card
spot – or hungrier. And we’re the only ones that have to face
the 13-1 Pittsburgh Steelers on their home turf.
Of course, the 1 in that 13-1 is the Baltimore Ravens. And
while the rationalizations in Pittsburgh will remind everyone
that Big Ben didn’t play that whole game in Baltimore, the
rest of the team did – and they lost. The Ravens have now
beat Pittsburgh in the last two meetings. If the defense does
its job, Boller continues to improve, and divine intervention
doesn’t interfere with our field goal attempts, there’s no
reason they shouldn’t be able to make it 3 in a row. Plus, if
Miami can beat New England, anything can happen in this
league.
But Pittsburgh is a really talented team. And they’re fighting
for home field advantage throughout the playoffs. If they win
on Sunday, it guarantees that, since New England had its
second loss of the season on Monday night.
Of course, that makes it that much more important for the
Ravens to win at Heinz field: It’s good practice for the
playoffs!
On a side note, you may remember that Terrell Owens fought
tooth-and-nail to avoid coming to Baltimore, forcing the
league to invalidate a perfectly legal trade. Yet, when T.O.
got injured on Sunday, where did he come for treatment?
You guessed it: straight to Charm City. So I guess we are
good enough for some things.
