Three steps to keep your holiday fare free of Frankenfoods

I hope by now most of your gifts are bought, wrapped and ready — and you can finally take a deep breath and relax!

Of course, there’s still the big dinner to think about. Whether you’re hosting the Christmas or Hanukkah feast for the first time or for the umpteenth time, it’s a lot of work.

And I don’t want to make it any harder for you, but if you don’t watch out, your friends and family could be gathering around a Monsanto wonderland of GMO foods.

I’ve been warning you about the dangers of genetically-modified foods for years now. And when Obama signed the revised DARK Act (for Deny Americans the Right to Know) into law this past July, it put the final kibosh on any state laws to label them.

But while the feds and their friends in the biotech industry don’t want us to know which foods are GMOs, there are still ways to peel back the secrets and find out where the Frankenfoods are lurking.

What to watch out for

One of the biggest lies we’ve been told again and again is that the science is settled and GMOs are as safe as mother’s milk.

Well, they’re not. And it’s not even close to being settled.

There is still so much we don’t know about how genetically-modified foods will affect humans that we could probably fill an encyclopedia with it.

And what we don’t know can hurt us –because what we already know is frightening.

For one thing, the chemical these food crops are saturated with, glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup), has now been classified as a probable human carcinogen by an expert panel from the World Health Organization.

And as to the question of whether there are any residues of glyphosate left on the food we eat, the answer is a big YES. Consumer groups have found plenty since they began testing for it earlier this year.

The FDA was supposed to test for glyphosate as well, but just last month the agency announced it had suspended the plan soon after starting as it wasn’t sure exactly how to do it. Not kidding.

So if you want to have a festive holiday dinner that doesn’t contain residues of a chemical that is linked to obesity, kidney and liver damage, intestinal diseases, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, here are three ways to do that.

#1: Watch out for corn, soy and canola. That means things like corn bread stuffing or corn muffin mixes need to be certified organic or labeled as GMO-free (more on that in a minute).

Also, corn and soy ingredients can turn up in some surprising places, such as sauce and gravy mixes, prepared soups, and even desserts and sides like cranberry sauce, which can contain GMO corn sweeteners like HFCS.

Even vegetarians aren’t safe! If you’re cooking for someone who doesn’t eat meat or turkey, remember that veggie burgers, fake meat, and tofu – unless organic – all contain GMO soy

And the same goes for oils made from these top three GMO crops. So if latkes are on your menu, use a high-quality coconut or olive oil to cook them with.

#2: Be sure of your sugar. Yes, even sugar may now be a Frankenfood, if it’s the kind that comes from sugar beets. But the good news is that cane sugar is still safe. While the bulk sugar we buy for cooking is usually cane, a lot of processed foods use beet sugar, which is cheaper. The trick here is to check the ingredient list for “cane sugar.” If it just says “sugar” it’s likely to be from those glyphosate-sprayed sugar beets.

And whichever sweet treats you’re planning, make sure they also don’t contain any HFCS, which is guaranteed to be from GMO corn. HFCS is also found in loads of other things like rolls, cranberry sauce, meat glazes, marinades and even pickles!

#3: Avoid all doubt. The easiest way to steer clear of GMO foods and ingredients is to either buy certified organic items, which can now be found in practically every supermarket, or look for the “Non-GMO Project Verified” label that’s on over 36,000 products.

You know I wouldn’t be advising you to go to this extra trouble if it wasn’t really important.

And in this case it really is.
